Gymkhana refers to Western horse games, including timed speed events such as barrel racing, keyhole race, keg race (also known as “down and back”), flag race, and pole bending.
All of these events are designed to display precise, controlled actions and tight teamwork between horse and rider at speed, but our Club offers a variety of classes, allowing riders to compete at the speed level they are most capable.
Although all levels of rider are encouraged to participate, if you disqualify in any one game because you failed to follow the pattern or knock down equipment, you are expected to exit the ring quickly.
Northwestern Riding and Driving Club divisions include Youth (children under the age of 18, walk, trot or controlled canter – not to exceed 3 steps), Youth Open (children of the same age, canter and gallop), Novice (adults, walk, trot), Intermediate (trot and canter), Open (adults, canter and gallop).
